Minimally Invasive Surgery Q & A

What is da Vinci robotic surgery?

Da Vinci robotic surgery is an advanced surgical technology that aims to improve outcomes for patients by providing robotic support to the surgeon. There are three components in the da Vinci system:

Surgeon console

Dr. Gutierrez sits in the surgeon console during your operation, where she has a close-up 3D view of your internal organs and tissues. She controls the surgical instruments in the same way as if she were performing the surgery with her own hands, but the robotic controls significantly increase her range of motion.

Patient cart

The robotic instruments Dr. Gutierrez uses are on the patient cart, which sits next to the operating table during the procedure. Dr. Gutierrez controls the instruments on the cart from her surgeon console.

Vision cart

The vision cart is the link between the surgeon console and the patient cart, the technology hub that supports the high-definition 3D vision system.

Why would I need da Vinci robotic surgery?

Da Vinci robotic surgery is an alternative to open surgery. Open surgery carries the following risks:

  • Causes considerable tissue damage
  • Results in high levels of postoperative pain
  • Increases the chance of infection
  • Requires general anesthetic, which adds to the risk of complications
  • Often requires an extended recovery period
  • Leaves large scars

Open surgery is still the only option for certain procedures, but wherever possible, Dr. Gutierrez uses less invasive techniques, such as laparoscopic surgery.

Laparoscopic surgery only requires a small number of incisions that are just large enough to insert instruments into your body. A laparoscope is a flexible tube with a miniaturized camera on the end. The camera sends images back to a monitor screen that enables Dr. Gutierrez to guide special long-handled instruments. Laparoscopic surgery causes far less trauma than open surgery, resulting in:

  • Reduced risk of infection
  • Less pain
  • Shorter recovery period
  • Minimal scarring
  • Reduced risk of complications

Da Vinci robotic surgery goes a step further, combining laparoscopic techniques with robotic technology so Dr. Gutierrez can perform the procedure with heightened dexterity.

What procedures is da Vinci robotic surgery used for?

Dr. Gutierrez uses da Vinci robotic technology to carry out procedures such as:

  • Hysterectomies
  • Pelvic organ prolapse surgery
  • Myomectomy (fibroid removal)
  • Endometriosis resection

If you need surgery, Dr. Gutierrez discusses the options and you consider your treatment together.  For comprehensive, compassionate surgical care, call Dr. Gutierrez today or book an appointment online.
